A Japanese carrier, Softbank which was known as J-Phone previously, had its own set of emojis from 1997 until 2016. Softbank had a huge influence on the original set of emojis developed by Apple. The original emoji set of Apple was made to be compatible with J-Phone because iPhone was previously Softbank-exclusive when it was first released.
In 2016, Softbank announced its intention to switch to Google emojis, for phones that support Android 7.0 or later OS. Softbank has not released any updates for their emoji set.
